The Belgian Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, Nicole de Moor, said Friday that Imam Hassan Iquioussen has been sent back to Morocco.

In a press release issued on Friday, the Secretary of State stressed: “We cannot allow an extremist to walk around our territory. Those who have no right to be here must be sent back. Thanks to good cooperation, we have returned this man to Morocco, his home country.

“Iquioussen had taken refuge in our country this summer after France decided not to renew his residence permit and to send him back to Morocco. On the orders of Secretary of State de Moor, he was placed in a detention center in November because he did not have permission to remain on Belgian territory,” the document adds.

The French Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin, had issued a decision to expel Hassan Iquioussen at the end of July, accusing him of making anti-Semitic and sexist remarks, which was overturned by the Administrative Court on August 5, before it was approved by the Council of State on August 30.

Moroccan-born Imam Hassan Iquioussen is subject to a European arrest warrant after escaping French authorities, who ordered his deportation to Morocco.

French media outlets indicat that “the fugitive imam has become the subject of a European arrest warrant,” especially after suspicion of him taking asylum in Belgium.
