The National Press Council (CNP) has written a letter on Friday to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), demanding guarantees of the right of Moroccan journalists to cover “without repressive, political or diplomatic restrictions” the African Championship of local players (CHAN), organized in Algeria from January 13 to February 4, 2023.

The CNP called on CAF ro ensure Moroccan media professionals “the freedom of movement and transport them directly from Morocco to Algeria”, stressing that “access to information, the right to information , safety and protection of journalists, are international principles shared by nations and peoples”.

The letter demands that the Algerian authorities treat Moroccan journalists with dignity, “so that they can fulfill their professional duties, in accordance with the African charters relating to freedom of the press, expression and human rights.”

Morocco is still waiting for  an official response from CAF concerning the participation of the Kingdom in the sporting event, Faouzi Lekjaa said in a response to questions from journalists during a press briefing he held following the government council meeting on Thursday.

“Morocco has requested that the plane that will transport the national team next January obtain authorization to land at Constantine airport, the city in which the national team will play,” Lekjaa said.

Scheduled in Algeria from January 13 to February 4, 2023, the African Nations Championship 2022 will feature African teams of players playing in their national leagues, a competition where Morocco are the most decorated and successful in Africa since its start in 2007 with two titles.

The Moroccan federal body had demanded from CAF that the Cubs travel via a special flight of the Royal Air Morocco (RAM) official carrier from Rabat to Constantine, the host city of the games.
