Peruvian authorities arrested President Pedro Castillo on Wednesday after he attempted to stage a coup d’etat before Congress was to vote on a new motion to depose of him.

Police arrested Castillo when he was leaving the government building in Lima on accusations of leading a criminal group.

The incumbent head of state said during a video-broadcasted message to the Nation that he was dissolving the Congress and naming an “emergency government.”

In the meantime, the Congress voted in an extraordinary session to vacate the presidential seat and dismiss the current President.

Castillo , who has recently been fighting allegations of corruption, was elected in June 2021 after he defeated his right-wing rival.

He is the last of several Peruvian presidents to be dismissed in the last few years, as the country faces a political deadlock.
