The US Food and Drug Administration has greenlit a lab-grown meat product for human consumption, after doing a “careful evaluation”.
The lab-grown chicken produced by the company Upside Foods will not be sold yet, before the U.S. Department of Agriculture inspect the company’s production facilities and product. But industry experts anticipate a full approval of the meat in upcoming months.
Upside Food’s lab-grown chicken is biologically identical to standard chicken meat but doesn’t require killing animals to be made.
The meat is instead created using cells extracted from real chickens, which are then grown in tanks with a nutrient mixture that includes fats, sugars, amino acids, and vitamins.
