The Moroccan Coalition of Human Rights Organizations, which brings together around 20 NGOs, denounced this Saturday “the humiliating and degrading treatment” of some consulates of European Union member countries in Morocco, towards visa applicants.
In an open letter addressed to the EU ambassador in Rabat, Patricia Llombard, the collective stresses that this unjust treatment “has intensified recently.”
These practices, says the letter, have become systematic, and are hindering many Moroccans from essential travel, either required for their education, careers, and emergency personal circumstances.
The NGOs called out the “significant and surprising” reduction in the number of visas by the “voluntary, total or partial” closure of platforms for making appointments.
They also criticized the fact that consulates do not give explanations for the refusal of applications, and do not reimburse the application fees to applicants whose visa requests have been rejected.
The same source emphasizes the case of France, which has officially reduced by half the granting of visas to Moroccans, since September 2021.
Since then, other consulates such as those in Spain have seen an increase in visa applications, according to EFE.
