FIFA stated in a statement that the decision to remove beer sales points from Qatar’s World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters was made after discussions with Qatar authorities.

The beer ban is the most recent change to Qatar’s strict alcohol policy that has heightened tensions between FIFA, soccer’s global governing body, and the Muslim nation.

The U-turn on beer will complicate FIFA’s $75 million sponsorship agreement with Budweiser; enrage fans who are already irritated by the event’s restrictions, costs, and inconveniences.

However, the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations, and licensed venues will continue to sell alcoholic beverages.
