As the Gulf state prepares to host the global tournament in less than two weeks, Qatar’s World Cup ambassador told German television broadcaster ZDF that homosexuality was damage in the mind.”

Former Qatari international Khalid Salman addressed the issue of homosexuality, which is illegal in the conservative Muslim country, in an interview filmed in Doha and to be aired later on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

Some soccer players have expressed concern about the rights of fans traveling to the event, particularly LGBT+ people and women, whom rights groups claim are discriminated against by Qatari laws.
