Morocco placed 47th as a low-threat country in the Global Hunger Index,  according to the International Food Policy Research Institute’s (IFPRI) latest data.

The country’s hunger level moved from 15.8% in 2000 to 12.4% in 2007, 9.6% in 2014, and 9.2% this year, recording a change of -4.2% since 2014, said the same source.

Although the Kingdom was ranked among the countries with a low level of hunger threat in the Green Zone, the data showed that undernourishment in the country moved from 6.3% between 2000 and 2002 to 5.5% between 2006 and 2008. and 4.1% between 2013 and 2015, rising again to 5.6% between 2019 and 2021.

In contrast, other indicators recorded a decline, as wasting of children under five years of age moved from 4.1% between 1998 and 2002 to 2.6% between 2017 and 2021, while stunting among children under 5 years moved from 24.8% between 1998 and 2002 to 15.1% between 2017 and 2021, then the mortality rate for children under five years old moved from 5.2% in 2000 to 1.9% in 2020.

The study’s index involved 136 countries, stating that “the toxic mixture of conflict, climate change, and the Covid-19 pandemic are all factors that have already left millions exposed to food price shocks and vulnerable to further crises.”

In Afghanistan, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Somalia, and Yemen, an unprecedented 970,000 people – ten times more than five years ago – are suffering from catastrophic levels of hunger, said the same source.

“Now the war in Ukraine with its indirect effects on global supplies and food, fertilizers and fuel prices turn the crisis into a catastrophe,” according to the same source.
