The government of the United Kingdom announced the removal of restrictions that had previously prevented UK businesses from selling alcohol abroad in a number of nations, including Morocco.
Announced on October 13 in a press release, the removal of trade obstacles has unlocked export markets worth over £100 million (MAD 1.241.610.834).
“Morocco removed 49% tariffs that were mistakenly imposed on a range of UK spirits,” said Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch according to the official UK website.
This change will help the UK to reach millions of new potential customers and boost alcohol exports, which reached £6.5 billion last year.
The UK’s recently resolved trade barriers are now part of a long list of trade barriers that have been lifted over the past two years, which has grown to include more than 400 hurdles in 70 different nations.
The iconic British brands The Glenlivet, Beefeater Gin, and Chivas Scotch are all owned by Pernod Ricard, who also strongly supports the UK’s trade agenda.
The companies see significant benefits in free trade agreements as well as in the International Trade Department’s (DIT) efforts to reduce barriers to market access, particularly its aid in resolving recent issues with the export of their Scotch whiskies to Morocco.
Anishka Jelicich, the UK Director of Public Affairs for Pernod Ricard, said that the UK is winning markets and securing jobs thanks to the country’s global trade policy.
“We value DIT’s often unsung work breaking down market access barriers every day across the globe. For example, thanks to DIT’s intervention last year, we were able to resolve Customs paperwork issues which meant we would have had to pay a 49% tariff to Morocco, Africa’s fourth largest market for Scotch whisky,” said the director.
