A few weeks before the high-level Morocco-Spain meeting (RAN), Spanish President Pedro Sanchez decided to exclude pro-Polisario ministers from his delegation.
Spanish newspaper OKdario reports that Sanchez decided to exclude ministers from far left party Podemos, his ally in the coalition, from taking part in his upcoming visit to Morocco.
Quoting government sources, the Spanish news site says that “the High-Level Meeting between Spain and Morocco constitutes a transcendental meeting for the development of the deep and dense relations of friendship and cooperation that exist between two strategic partners such as Spain and Morocco.”
The president’s decision reflects his government’s will to “avoid possible outbursts” as has happened in the Spanish Congress, says the same source, adding that the executive has decided not to include any issue on the agenda that requires the presence of the Podemos ministers.
The convening of this forum is one of the agreements reached between King Mohammed VI and the President, during his visit to Rabat a few months ago, after the latter made a historic shift on the Western Sahara issue.
The last RAN meeting dates back to 2018, since the one scheduled for 2020 had to be suspended due to the pandemic.
Since then, relations between the two neighboring countries have been frozen, before being revived following the appeasement and support for the Moroccan autonomy plan.
