Morocco’s Agriculture Ministry issued a  decision last week prohibiting the fishing of several marine species along the Atlantic coasts for five years.

The decision was made in response to the widespread consumption of species such as sardines, anchovies, char, mackerel, swordfish, latch, and Arctic char, among others.

The decision prohibits fishing from May 1 to June 30 of each year in the width of the Atlantic coasts located between the parallels 22 degrees north and 23 degrees north, measured from the baselines at a distance of 15 nautical miles.

The decision made exceptions to the prohibition’s requirements, stating that “during the prohibition periods, the National Institute for Research in Maritime Fisheries may practice fishing for the species stipulated in the two marine areas provided for in order to take samples, in accordance with its scientific research program.”

“The license determines its validity period, the areas in which it is licensed to take samples, the fishing equipment that can be used, and the quantities of the specified species,” the decision added.

The decision proceeded with a poll conducted by the National Institute for Research in Maritime Fisheries in consultation with the Fishing Chambers.

The head of the Mediterranean Chamber of Fisheries, Youssef Benjelloun told Hespress that it is an old decision that has been updated.

Hespress examined a copy of a previous decision issued in 2017, which also prohibited fishing the stated types in the same locations and conditions as the recent decision.

In late August, the Moroccan Ministries of the Interior and Agriculture and fisheries held joint meetings with officials from the Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests officials in southern provinces in order to put an end to indiscriminate deep sea fishing in the region, which threatens local maritime resources.
