A study on vaping products and their use among 14–17-year-olds in New South Wales called for immediate legislative action to counter the easy accessibility of nicotine products for young people.
Published in The Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health and conducted by the University of Sydney, the study called ‘Generation vape’ tracked Australian teenagers’ growing illegal use of vaping products.
“Curiosity” was found to be the common reason behind teenage smoking habits, with a total of 721 young people aged 14 to 17 years having participated in the survey.
Out of all the participants, 65% had never smoked or vaped and 23% had both previously smoked and vaped.
The majority (80%) said that they got their vapes from their friends.
Ever-vapers, a term frequently used in the report that means having at least a few puffs of a vape, have been said that they had used a vape that they knew contained nicotine.
Illegal nicotine products are constantly being seized due to Australia’s strict measures to control youth’s access to nicotine products.
Prior to this study, not much had been published on Australian teen vaping habits.
A lot of recent studies have been analyzing teenage smoking and vaping habits, to warn of the dangerous risks that result from the unhealthy habit, and to try to contain its danger.
