Spain intends to receive about 14,000 Moroccan seasonal workers during the upcoming red fruits harvest season in the province of Huelva, reported Spanish media outlet Europe press.
This move came after a meeting held last week with the Regional Committee in the province to discuss the need for an increased workforce.
Spain will call on 3,000 new female workers, in addition to 11,000 seasonal workers who will return to Spain after the end of the red fruits harvest season, added to the same source.
Huelva committee described that during the last season, the number was limited, citing that “the number of workers expectations was much lower than the labor needs of strawberries and red fruits in the province.”
The same cooperatives indicated that “the number of contracts has decreased, in contrast to the strategy of growing the crop, which is known to have a noticeable increase.”
“Before the outbreak of the health crisis, it was allowed to hire over 16,500 seasonal workers from Morocco,” they added, according to the same source.
Earlier in June, a total of 11,100 seasonal workers returned to Morocco after finishing their work, said Spanish media outlet Huelva24.
