Four individuals were arrested and are being investigated following the death of a 14-year-old child from Boumia, who underwent an illegal abortion after being raped.
The procedure was carried out by a midwife working in the regional hospital of Midelt, and a technician at Azrou Hospital, impersonating a nurse, has stirred the anger of women’s rights associations.
Faouzia Yassine from the diplomatic association of Moroccan women says that the child should be in school and not deceased because of the very tragic accident.
Samira Mouhia, Federal President of the Women’s Rights League called what happened to the girl an ‘ugly crime’ and said that it is a very extreme kind of violence.
Mouhia told Hespress AR that “Just like the predator is responsible, the government is responsible as well” explaining that it did not work to protect girls and women from clandestine abortions or unwanted pregnancies.
She added that the child is a victim of the government that did not want to ratify a law based on equality and a gender approach to guarantee the dignity of women while protecting them.
Mouhia calls to “lift the criminalization of all cases of medical abortion, which girls and women of their own will perform to preserve their dignity and guarantee their rights while invoking Morocco’s international obligations and embodying the principles established in the constitution.”
