During the period between 29 August and 4 September, traffic accidents took the lives of 14 Moroccans, according to the general directorate of national security (DGSN).

It was reported that the total of accidents for that period is a whopping 1,544, which left 2,106 people wounded, and 74 severely injured.

Based on a press release by DGSN, MAP reported that the car accidents were caused by many reasons, from the inadvertence of drivers, failure to respect the right lanes, excessive speeding, failure to respect the safety distance between vehicles, change of direction without using a signal, failure to control vehicles, non-respect of the stop sign, unauthorized change of direction, driving in the left lane, non-respect of the red light, driving while intoxicated, to traffic in the wrong direction.

The security services of the directorate established 46,475 fines and drew up 7,267 reports submitted to the prosecution, and collected 39,208 settlement fines.

The sums collected from these fines reached MAD 8,451,225.

The National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) previously reported that traffic accidents leave about 3,500 deaths annually, more than 10,000 seriously injured, and have a huge economic and social cost estimated at 1.7% of the gross domestic product (GDP), which is equivalent to MAD 19.5 billion annually.

NARSA’s presentation in April entitled “Road safety: Outcome and Prospects”, went over the negative effects of traffic accidents on the country’s reputation and mentioned the strong relationship between traffic accidents and sustainable development.
