Spanish forces rescued on Sunday 63 sub-Saharan migrants, including 12 women and 4 minors near a port in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands.
Their boat was found adrift and without fuel, sources from Spanish Maritime Rescue told Spanish agency EFE.
The state company received a notice from 112 around 8 in the morning and mobilized its guard and the Sasemar 103 plane, which spotted the boat around 10:30.
During the pandemic, the Canary Islands route saw a mass resurgence of migrants who started using the deadly Atlantic route to escape poverty and conflict. The numbers of arrivals matched those of the 2006 crisis that drove Spain to closely work with Morocco and Sahel countries to curb migration.
