Morocco commemorates today the 69th anniversary of the King and the People’s Revolution. August 20 represents the embodiment of a pact between the monarchy and the Moroccan citizens.

Celebrating this unforgettable event is an opportunity for Moroccans to remember the historic sacrifice of the National Resistance Movement to serve the Kingdom’s independence.

On the same day in 1953, French colonial authorities forced the late King Mohammed V, the legitimate Sultan and the symbol of liberation and independence, and the Royal Family into exile in Corsica, then in Madagascar in 1954.

The Sultan’s exile sparked demonstrations by the Moroccan people against the French colonizers, accusing of offending his dignity and integrity. The movement was framed by the Istiqlal party and became more alarming for the protectorate authorities.

By expelling the monarch, the colonists wanted to establish the authority of Ben Arfa and weaken the fervor of national resistance, a decision made after the uprisings of that period.

As the operations of the National Liberation Army intensified, the acts of resistance and struggle multiplied and increased until the end of the protectorate era with the triumphant return of the late King Mohammed V and the royal family from exile on 16 November 1955.

“This revolution conveys a positive message, even if it was born in a particularly harsh context, it allowed Moroccans to grasp the true meaning of patriotism and helped us to move forward,” reads the speech of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in 2018.

This glorious revolution will remain in the annals of Moroccan history as a high point, which proved to the world the determination of the whole nation not giving up on its values and symbols. This event has seen the sacrifices of the men and women, of all ages, to defend the freedom and independence of the Kingdom.
