Nearly 3 out of 10 (29.7%) young Moroccans are jobless, said the High Commission for Planning (HCP) in a recent report on August 12, issued in celebration of international youth day.
Additionally, 3 out of 4 (75.8%) unemployed Moroccan youth live in urban areas, while 67.3% are men and 90.1% are graduates.
The unemployment rate reached 31.8% for young people aged 15 to 24, compared to 13.7% for people aged 25 to 44, and 3.8% for people aged 45 and over, said HCP.
The unemployment rate for young people aged 15 to 24 with a higher education degree accounts for 61.2%, further stated the same source.
30.4% of unemployed youth have a middle-level degree, and 12.9% have no degree.
The youth unemployment rate is more prevalent in urban areas and among young women. It peaks at 46.7% in urban areas, compared with 15.9% in rural areas, said the same source.
The unemployment rate for young women (41.9%) is 13% higher than for men (28.4%), added HCP.
The increase in the unemployment rate is more present among young people, explained the same source.
Between 2019 and 2021, this rate increased by 6.9 points, up compared to 3.1 points for the entire working population, said the same source.
70.4% of unemployed youth have been unemployed for a year or more, and nearly three-quarters have never integrated the labor market (73.4%), added HCP.
Jobless and out-of-school youth
Over 1 out of 4 young people aged 15 to 24 (26% or 1.5 million) nationwide are not working, neither enrolled in education nor doing training, said HCP.
Nearly 73.4% of them are young women, 41.3% of whom are married and 65.7% of whom have a degree. In rural areas, about 81.7% of this category are young women, added HCP.
Among the population of school age in secondary education (15 to 17), 12.6% (270,000 people) are jobless, are not enrolled in education, and are not doing training, further stated the same source.
This proportion involves girls with 19.5% (198,000 people), and 6.5% among men (72,000 people).
For young people aged 18 to 24, this proportion reaches 33.5% (1,259,000 people), 49.1% among girls (925,000 people) and 17.8% among men (335,000 people), according to the same source.
