Israeli Prime Minister, Yair Lapid is set to visit Morocco in the coming weeks in preparation for a summit that would reunite the Arab countries that signed the “Abraham” agreements with Tel Aviv, on its second anniversary.
The Israeli Prime Minister is preparing to visit Morocco before in order to prepare for a conference between the heads of states that have signed peace agreements with Israel, according to the Hebrew newspaper Israel Hayom, quoting diplomatic sources.
“There is preparation at the highest level for a summit of the countries participating in the peace plan,” according to the Israeli news outlet.
Unlike the Negev summit that brought together foreign ministers, the current summit preparation is expected to take place “at the highest level.”
Foreign minister Nasser Bourita is set to travel to Israel on official business in September to join other regional leaders in commemorating the second anniversary of the Abraham Accords’ signing.
This will be Bourita’s second visit to Israel after he attended the Negev summit in late March 2022.
During the visit, Israeli and Moroccan officials are expected to greenlight a decision to elevate Morocco’s liaison office in Tel Aviv to the rank of the embassy.
Rabat had previously announced that it was planning to open an embassy in Israel this summer.
Israel aims to expand cooperation on matters ranging from military, politics, investment, agriculture, tourism, energy, and more, with several Israeli officials visiting Morocco in order to reach agreements in different sectors.
The strengthening of diplomatic ties between Israel and Morocco constitutes the fruit of the trilateral Abraham accords agreement signed in December 2020.
