A large forest fire broke out Thursday morning in Berlin following an explosion at a police ammunition depot, fire officials said.
“A fire is underway in the Grunewald forest,” west of the city, and “there are explosions,” firefighters said.
“The fire has spread over an area of 15,000 square meters [over 3.7 acres], first to a police ammunition and explosives storage and defusing site, and then to the surrounding forest,” they continued.
The fire department could not immediately intervene because of the danger of explosion. They positioned themselves in a perimeter established one kilometer from the ammunition depot, where several explosions continued to sound.
The Berlin region is suffering from a particularly severe drought. A large forest fire in July burned more than 850 hectares in southern Brandenburg, the region surrounding the capital.
