Farmers and animal breeders in Spain are standing up against the European Commission’s (EC) permit to import poultry meat from Morocco.
The Coordination of Farmers’ Organizations (COAG), along with the Union of Small Farmers and Breeders (UPA) have expressed their rejection of EC’s decision, on the grounds that these imports “do not respect the regulations and breeding standards of European Union in regards to biosecurity, quality and animal welfare.”
These associations are prompting the Spanish government and the European Union to “reduce these imports from third countries and give more support to local poultry farms.”
COAG and UPA believe that the entry of poultry meat from Morocco could weigh on the finances of Spanish breeders, heavily hit by the erosion of profitability due to the low prices received by professionals.
The European Commission explained, as a reminder, that Moroccan authorities “have provided guarantees in regards to compliance with the requirements of notification and declaration of diseases relevant to poultry.”
According to 2020 statistics, Morocco exported $659,000 in poultry meat, making it the 83rd largest exporter of the good in the world.
At the same year, poultry meat was the 481st most exported product in Morocco.
