Brahim Saadoun appeals his case in Donetsk

The defense of Moroccan citizen Ibrahim Saadoun, who was sentenced to death by pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk , has appealed his sentence, according to lawyer Yelena Vesnina.

“Yes, I submitted the appeal,” the lawyer told the official Russian news agency, TASS.

On June 16, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) issued precautionary measures in Saadoun’s favour, with a request to the Russian government to ensure that the death penalty is not applied, and that adequate conditions of detention are provided to the Moroccan, as well as the provision of necessary medical assistance and medication.

Russia has said that it will not comply with the precautionary measures issued in favor of the Moroccan citizen, as is the case with the British citizens Sean Boehner and Aiden Aslin, who were also sentenced to death, like Saadoun, in June, for fighting among the Ukrainians.

Moscow claims that the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War does not apply to those concerned, as they are mercenaries.

However, both Ukraine and the European Court of Human Rights have stated that all three belong to the Ukrainian armed forces.

Saadun joined the Ukrainian army in 2021, while Beiner and Aslen joined in 2018. The three were assigned to marines in Mariupol, in the Donetsk region.

The Moroccan’s father recently sent a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, requesting pardon for his son, according to Russian media.
