Israeli Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked will fly to Morocco on Monday for a diplomatic visit, becoming the third cabinet minister to do so, according to a statement released by her office on Sunday.
Shaked intends to enhance bilateral collaboration with Rabat in order to send Moroccan nurses and construction workers to Israel.
Shaked is due to visit Morocco’s interior minister, foreign minister, planning minister, economics minister, and other top officials, according to Israeli media.
“We are certain that this cooperation with the Moroccans will help us advance the housing market and also support the elderly population in Israel,” a statement by the Israeli interior ministry said.
Morocco is set to officially open its embassy in Israel this summer, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Yaïr Lapid.
Lapid revealed that his Moroccan counterpart, Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita is expected to travel this summer to officially open the Kingdom’s embassy in Israel.
The head of Israeli diplomacy did not give an exact date regarding Bourita’s visit as well as the date of the opening of the Moroccan embassy in Tel Aviv.
Israel is already represented in Morocco with a liaison office in Rabat opened in August 2021, headed by David Govrin, but has not upgraded the mission to an embassy, said the same source.
Morocco opened its liaison office in Tel Aviv in February of 2021.
Israeli diplomatic sources also revealed to the press that Israel will upgrade its representation in Morocco around the same time as Bourita’s visit to Israel, said the Times of Israel.
Lapid lately visited Morocco on the first anniversary of the normalization of relations at the end of last year.
