A total of 800 Moroccan seasonal workers are expected to return to Morocco starting this week, with four return trips per week, according to the Spanish media agency Europa Press.
The number of Departures will increase from the second half of June, when seasonal workers will finish strawberry picking, added the same source.
Additionally, 11,100 arrivals are expected to return during this week, said Spanish media outlet Huelva24.
The process will last until the end of June, while only those who have signed an extension, are going to switch to other missions in the agricultural sector in Huelva.
The Interprofessional Association of Strawberry (Interfresa) said that the seasonal workers “will leave once they finish their work,” recalling that there will be no restrictions on entry to Morocco and that ships from Spain to the kingdom are scheduled on a daily basis.
Interfresa also explained that the seasonal workers who will return first are women “with special needs.”
The first group of women -over 800- originally hired in Morocco for the agricultural campaign in Huelva arrived on January 12 after being transferred by the agricultural organizations in the province from the port of Algeciras (Cadiz), added the same source.
The arrivals continued until the first half of March to complete the total quota.
By the end of February, a total of 6,608 seasonal workers were already in the province, according to the same source.
The arrival of those Moroccan seasonal workers was initially planned for the end of December but has been postponed due to the country’s border closure, in an effort to contain the Omicron variant at that time.
