Spain will not take part in this year’s edition of the African Lions military, maneuvers organized by the Moroccan and American armies in Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal, and Ghana.

According to Spanish news agency EFE citing military and diplomatic sources, African Lion 22, to be held between June 20 and July 1, will go on without Spain’s participation for the second year in a row.

The Spanish Army did not participate in the 2021 edition of these maneuvers, as Spain and Morocco were at the height of a year-long diplomatic crisis.

However, despite restored bilateral relations and improving bilateral cooperation, Spain will not be present this year, for reasons that have yet to be disclosed.

As reported by the US Military Command Africa (AFRICOM), more than 7,000 US and allied troops will participate in this year’s edition. The exercise will span several regions of southern Morocco, namely Agadir, Tan Tan, Mehbes, Taroudant, and Ben Guerir, in addition to Kenitra, central Morocco.

The African Lion maneuvers are a sign of the strength of military cooperation between the United States and Morocco, a country that has approved in recent years a roadmap to modernize the equipment of its army, with France and the United States as main suppliers.

They include military land, air, and maritime operations and humanitarian assistance exercises.

Last year’s maneuvers have been an astounding success, having brought together a total of 7,000 participants from nine nations and NATO. The training is also focused on enhancing readiness for US and partner nation forces.
