The head of the Israeli liaison office in Rabat, David Gorvin said his country is open to having Morocco mediate talks with Hamas as Israeli marches on Jerusalem Day mark one year since the 11-day Gaza-Israel war that cost a devastating toll on both ends.
“We truly believe that Morocco can play a very significant role, as it used to play during the ’80s and the ’90s. We believe Morocco can play this role once again, as it enjoys very good relations with Israel and with other Arab countries,” he told US-based Media Line.
Garvin spoke a few days before Israelis celebrate Jerusalem Day which they see as the anniversary of the reunification of East Jerusalem, including the Old City, with West Jerusalem during the 1967 war. Palestinians see East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestine.
Garvin said tension between Palestinians and Israelis would not undermine the Kingdom’s relations with Israel, citing Jewish historical links as argument.
“Our binational relations are based not only on interests. They are based on common culture and shared values. This is why you see a very rapid development of our bilateral relations since the signing of the agreements,” he said.
While Morocco aligns itself with the economic gains provided by the Abraham accords, it continues to position itself as an actor in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
When fighting subdued last year, Senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh traveled to Morocco, as well as other Middle Eastern nations.
In his position as leader of the PJD, Haniyeh met with Saad-Eddine Al-Othmani and was welcomed by other political parties.
However, the Moroccan authorities claimed that the visit was “private” and that the King never met with Haniyeh.
