The prices of bottled mineral water and soda products increased in recent days in Morocco, with rises ranging between 20 cents to MAD 1 from their normal price, linked to spikes in global prices.
Ain Atlas, Ain Ifrane, Ain Sultan, Sidi Ali, Ain Saiss, and Oulmes are among the companies to increase prices.
According to Article 2 of Law 104.12, prices of goods, products, and services are set by free competition, with the exception of items, products, and services whose list is determined by a regulatory text following consultation with the Competition Council.
Ain Saiss mineral 1.5 L water bottle used to cost MAD 5, has increased by MAD 1 a bottle, as well as soda making company Oulmes.
A well-informed source from within Oulmes company told Hespress FR in a statement that the increase in pricing is driven by the global context marked by the rise in fuel prices and raw materials.
“The suppliers from whom we import raw materials, whether in Morocco or abroad, have all increased their prices,” he explained.
“Fuel prices also skyrocketed, and to transport raw materials and goods, new taxes were added,” he further specified.
Currently, fuel prices in the country exceeded MAD 14.5 a liter, for both gasoline and diesel.
“Raw materials that we use have all increased, and are mainly linked to packagings, such as plastic, plastic caps, and labels that are part of the design of the bottle,” according to the same source.
The consumer price index in Morocco rose by 1.8% in April, up compared to the previous month, said the High Commission for Planning (HCP) in its latest note.
This increase comes as a result of the increase of 3.0% in the food index, and a rise of 0.9% in the non-food index, added HCP.
The inflation indicator rose by 0.8% month-on-month, and 4.4% year-on-year, said the same source.
Since the outbreak of the Russian offensive in Ukraine on February 24, global prices witnessed a soar, mainly in food and fuel prices due to disruptions in trade as well as the imposed sanctions on Russia.
