Hard currency tourism revenues to Morocco rose by 80% at the end of March, up compared to the same period last year, according to Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor.
The Minister said in response to an oral question in the House of Representatives, that tourism revenues from hard currency reached MAD 9.7 billion, up compared to MAD 5.4 billion recorded previously, while traditional industry exports increased by 25% during the same period.
Following the pandemic’s negative effects on the sector, the rate of filling tourist accommodation establishments did not exceed 50%, even in the pre-pandemic period.
The Minister stressed the need to intensify efforts in order to raise the filling rate, using advertising, marketing, and digital tools, in addition to partnerships with airlines as well as international travel organizers.
“The Ministry’s goal is to double the number of arrivals by 2030,” she added.
Likewise, Ammor said that her Ministry received 781 requests for renovation of tourist establishments, which will be processed in the upcoming days.
Previously, the government approved an emergency plan worth MAD 2 billion to help support the tourism sector as a means to bounce back from the negative effects of the pandemic.
The Tourism Ministry said this plan was aimed at saving businesses, preventing massive job losses, and preparing for the revival of the sector after 22 months of the health crisis, according to the Ministry’s previous press release.
In late February, the Ministry opened channels to identify tourism establishments eligible to receive MAD 1 billion in financial assistance.
