Bouchra Karboubi will be the head referee during this weekend’s Throne Cup final game, a historic first in Moroccan soccer.
Karboubi has been appointed by the arbitration committee of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) as the main referee of the finale for the 2019-2020 edition.
The game will oppose AS FAR with the Maghreb of Tetouan this Saturday, at the Grand Stadium of Agadir, south of Morocco.
Born in Taza, Bouchra developed an early passion for football. The now 34-year-old attended a local referee school in 2002, and by 2007, after Morocco launched the official women’s football league, Bouchra became a referee for the girls’ games.
In 2014, the young athlete passed a physical test to oversee men’s games, before moving to international matches in 2016.
Karboubi, the first Moroccan woman referee to have directed a Botola Pro match, has since also officiated at several major continental competitions.
She officiated at the African Cup 2021, the 2018 Women’s CAN in Ghana, and directed other international matches. Her impeccable decisions and sharp eye earned her a spot among the candidates to referee at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
However, refereeing is not Karboubi’s only contribution to women’s empowerment in Morocco. Breaking additional barriers, she is also a police inspector. The Directorate General of National Security (DGSN) had authorized her to work as a referee alongside her being part of Moroccan law enforcement.
