This Sunday, the streets of Morocco are awaiting a union movement to commemorate Workers’ Day, which comes on the eve of Eid Al Fitr, Islam’s Ramadan closing holiday.

Preparations have been underway for the week leading up to the event, as COVID-19-related restrictions have eased this year, allowing for gatherings and celebrations.

Trade unions, involved in a long and tumultuous dialogue with the government, have eventually come to an agreement with the executive.

Head of government, Aziz Akhannouch, chaired a meeting with union leaders that ended with the signing of an agreement covering a series of union demands for the period 2022-2024.

Opinions on the agreement are split, with some unions planning marches to voice their dissatisfaction, while others have announced small celebratory gatherings.

Akhannouch congratulated the unions and the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises for reaching this agreement, saying that “Morocco has unions at the level of developed countries.”

The head of government indicated that the negotiations on this agreement were not easy, and pledged to implement all the commitments contained in the agreement and persist with dialogue with the unions.

The agreement includes a number of requirements, the most important of which is the increase in the minimum wage in the private sector by 10% in two installments starting from next year, and raising the minimum wage in the public sector to MAD 3,500 net.

The agreement includes unifying the minimum wage in the agricultural sector with the minimum wage in the sectors of industry, trade, and liberal professions by 2028, and raising family compensation from MAD 36 to MAD 100 for the fourth, fifth and sixth child. In addition, fathers will now be allowed a 15-day parental leave.
