Subsea cable manufacturer XLCC announced the start of works on the first phase of construction of the longest submarine cable, linking the UK and Morocco, for the period from 2025 to 2027.
This power project aims to support renewable energy, part of sustainable development goals.
This project will help produce clean energy daily in Morocco, from the sun during the day and wind at night, with battery power to help bridge the gaps.
The Xlinks Morocco-UK Power Project extends on four 3,800km long subsea cables, with the first phase connecting wind and solar power generated in Morocco exclusively to the UK in Devon.
As for Morocco, it will be located in the renewable energy-rich region of Guelmim Oued Noun, covering an approximate area of 1,500km2.
“This Morocco-UK Power Project will be a new electricity generation facility entirely powered by solar and wind energy combined with a battery storage facility,” said Xlinks on its website.
This “first of a kind” project will generate 10.5GW of zero-carbon electricity from the sun and wind to deliver 3.6GW of reliable energy for an average of 20+ hours a day. This is enough to provide low-cost, clean power to over 7 million British homes by 2030, specified the same source.
