Citizen initiative OTED organized on Thursday a webinar on the 4th edition of ‘Parlons Territoires,” during which several climate projects and public policies for climate adaptation in territories vulnerable to the consequences of climate change were brought to the forefront.

Many experts climate change experts participated in the webinar, namely; Quentin Ballin, Project Team Leader, Agriculture, Rural Development and Biodiversity Division, of the French Development Agency, Mouna Mseffer, journalist and co-author of “Morocco: climate justice, social emergencies.”

Ibrahim Hafidi, Director General of the National Agency for the Development of Oasis Zones and the Argan Tree (ANDZOA), Faissal sehbaoui, CEO of AgriEdge, Ahmed Baroudi: Managing Director of the Energy Investment Company, and Nadia Lamlili, project manager at the OCP Group also participated in the virtual conference.

“Each territory should work towards building its resilience. It’s all about adaptation with these new climatic conditions and taking decisions and actions both at the level of public policies and private sectors,” said Nadia Lamili, project manager at the OCP group.

She added that these decisions require the development of engineering plans specific to each territory because there is rarely a single solution.

Faissal Sehbaoui, CEO of AgriEdge, discussed water scarcity that is increasing in Morocco, resulting in future a lack of water supply in the North African country. “The rational management of water resources is now a must more it had ever been,” he said, noting that drought damage to the agricultural sector affects both rural livelihoods and the national economy as a whole.

Long-term climate change is making Morocco, which already faces rural water scarcity, more vulnerable to extreme weather events.

Faissal Sehbaoui highlighted that Moroccan start-ups “are now developing several digital solutions rationalize water management so as to provide the right quantity at the right time and thus avoid the waste very common in other irrigation practices.”

According to Moroccan expert Ibrahim Hafidi, each territory is called “to establish a diagnosis of vulnerability which will enable it to identify the risks linked to climate change as well as the changes to be made.”

OTED, a citizens’ initiative, aims to implement territorial projects. These projects should be inclusive, economically viable, and socially equitable and guarantee the environment protection.

Morocco is vulnerable to climate change, due to its geographical location, and is prone among others to water scarcity, declining agricultural production, and sea rise level.

Climate change issues have been gradually institutionalized in Morocco’s government. Therefore, Morocco aims to continue its efforts to fight against climate change within the framework of a global sustainable development vision.
