The Criminal Chamber of the First Instance in charge of money crimes in Fez refused, on Tuesday to grant bail to Rachid El Fayek, the parliamentary deputy head of the Awlad Al-Tayeb group involved in a real-estate gang.
El Fayek is charged with bribery, embezzlement, waste of public funds, forgery of official documents and abuse of power.
The court refused bail over concerns of obstruction of the course of justice.
Designated as “a mastermind of a criminal gang of real estate spoliation,” the RNI parliamentarian and president of the commune is facing charges ranging from the falsification of official documents and their use by public officials, corruption, fraud and being part of organized crime.
Hespress AR obtained special data from authorities in the districts of Fez, explaining that the investigation into this case was based on numerous complaints received by the Public Prosecution Office.
Citizens accused El Fayek of blackmailing them and forcing them to pay bribes in exchange for connecting their homes to water and electricity, all while alleging he has been seizing lands.
During the investigation led by the regional division of the Judicial Police, many citizens of the Ouled el-Tayeb commune were heard and confirmed that Rachid al-Fayek was forcing them to pay bribes in exchange for obtaining a construction permit as well as a housing permit.
The source indicated that El Fayek refused to respond to a number of summonses from the regional division of the Judicial Police, saying he was sick and unable to attend which prompted authorities to move forward with an arrest.
At the time of his arrest, the politician attempted to destroy evidence by throwing his phone onto a grill, which police were able to retrieve.
El Fayek was found in possession of an amount of MAD 11,480, bank receipts of MAD 380.00, MAD 255,000, MAD 100,000 and MAD 200,000. Police also found five phones and 20 unused SIM cards in Fayek’s car.
