Squid game director Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke about his release date plans for season 2 and said it would likely not be released before late 2024.
“I have to work on season two (…) I hopefully can show it to our fans by the end of 2024,” the South Korean director said at the MIPTV festival in Cannes in the south of France on Monday.
Hwang noted that he is returning to South Korea with plans to begin writing the second round of Squid Game, which he promises to be “more violent than Squid Game’s first season”.
Released on September 17, “Squid Game” follows Seong Gi-Hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, as he and hundreds of other desperate and deeply indebted contestants compete in a violent competition for roughly $38 million. Only one person can win the prize, and those who lose the series of children’s games have to die.
The “Squid Game” hashtag has gone viral on different social media platforms, which made it viewed over 22.8 billion times on TikTok, according to an NBC News report.
On the other hand, the series was also hugely criticized for its violence, because some scenes were packed with moments of intense and graphic violence, according to data from the Parents Television and Media Council.
