Morocco has been found to be the country least affected by terrorism in North Africa, according to the Global Terrorism Index 2022.

The United Nations Counter-Terrorism Program (UNCTAD) office in Rabat presented the 2022 edition of the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) this Wednesday, issued by the Institute for Economics and Peace, a global think tank based in Sydney, Australia.

Countries are ranked from most to least impacted by terrorism with a scoring of 0 to 10, the latter being most affected, as indicators include the number of terrorist incidents, deaths, injuries, and property damage.

In a ranking of 93 spots, Morocco is 76th with a score of 1.156, marking a two-spot improvement from the 2021 edition of the Index.

Within the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA), Morocco ranks 15th out of a total of 20 countries.

Iraq, 2nd worldwide, leads this regional ranking, followed by Syria, 5th, and Egypt ranking 15th.

The United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, and Kuwait take the last regional places, with the four countries obtaining a score of 0 and ranking 93rd globally.

Internationally, the countries most affected by terrorism are Afghanistan, which comes in first place with a score of 9.109 out of 10, followed by Iraq (8.511), Somalia (8.398), Burkina Faso (8.270), Syria (8.250), and Nigeria (8.233).

The 2022 edition of the Global Terrorism Index reveals that, despite a global increase in attacks, the impact of terrorism continues to decline.

In 2021, deaths from terrorism decreased by 1% to 7,142, while attacks increased by 17% to 5,226.

In addition, 119 countries had no attacks or deaths from terrorism in 2021, the best result since 2007.
