The Moroccan government has assured that “despite ample technical and organizational difficulties,” the transportation professionals’ aid package will be available to all registered beneficiaries on April 1, as previously announced.

During the press conference following this week’s government counsel, spokesperson Mustapha Baitas said that the domestic prices of fuel reflect the current international context, but that “the government is committed to providing the necessary aid to transportation professionals.”

“The price of gasoline reached USD 1200 in the port of Rotterdam yesterday, while the price of diesel reached USD 1100 dollars,” explained the official,” said Baitas, explaining the recent unprecedented spike in both gasoline and diesel prices in Morocco.

Regarding the weight of such significant financial aid on the government’s budget, Baitas once again confirmed that “the government will not revise the budget, as the Ministry of Finance has included important margins, that take the inflation and increased government spending into account.”

The budget has allowed for fiscal and financial room “to maneuver and maintain subsidies of basic materials, including wheat, said the official.

In regards to the recent arrest of 31 employees and officials related to the Ministry of Health’s “corrupt findings” within its ranks, Baitas said that “the government will go as far as possible in its handling of this case.”

In the first governmental statement since the scandal broke, the Minister said that “the case is an indication that this government is fully adamant on fighting corruption and has the courage to do so.”

Baitas added that “this government will not ‘normalize’ with corruption, the fight against corruption is a conviction, and this government has the audacity to tackle such cases.”

Regarding the government’s social dialogue with contractual teachers, who have been on a nationwide strike since early February, the official assured that “the government is always open for dialogue and the door is never closed,” but that disagreements and concessions are inevitable in the process of the government’s “ambitious, qualitative reform of the public education sector.”

Mustapha Baitas additionally commented on rumors about the devastating health risks of Algerian dates, which he denied, saying that “the dates are in conformity with Moroccan quality and health standards.”

The spokesperson also said that “the government is still working to find a solution for the Moroccan Ukraine students case,” adding that in the meantime, “Ukrainian universities have launched online classes, which the Moroccan students are taking while a solution is reached.”
