Andy Warhol’s iconic portrait of actress Marilyn Monroe is expected to fetch USD200 million, Christie’s auction house announced on Monday.
“Shot Sage Blue Marilyn,” a closeup of the late actress, is set to be auctioned off as part of a week of sales in May, the auction house said.
Christie’s is attempting to break the record for most expensive 20th-century artwork sold at auction, currently held by Picasso’s Women of Algiers, which went for USD179.4 million in 2015.
The proceeds of the sale are expected to go to the Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation Zurich, which aims to help children with healthcare and educational programs.
