Ukraine severed diplomatic ties, on February 24, with Russia, following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s declaration of a full invasion of the East-European country by land, air, and sea, the Ukrainian President announced.

“We broke off diplomatic ties with Russia,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared during a live televised address on Thursday.

“Ukraine is defending itself and we shall not cede our freedom,” the Ukrainian President announced, referring to the invasion as similar to Nazi Germany.

“Russia has attacked Ukraine in a cowardly and suicidal way like Nazi Germany did during World War II,” he stated.

Zelenskyy urged citizens with prior military experience to join the armed forces, encouraged blood donors, and promised amnesty to “all those who are now under sanctions but are ready to fight with Russia.”

Putin ordered an invasion, early on Thursday, of Ukraine in order to “demilitarize” its neighbor, which provoked severe criticism from Western nations, reports international media.

Zelenskiy had previously declared martial law and instructed the military to “inflict maximum losses,” the same source reports.
