Bread prices in bakeries throughout Morocco increased, coinciding with the increase in consumer goods and fuel prices in recent months.
The President of the National Federation of Owners of Bakeries and Sweets in Morocco, El-Houssain Azaz, told Hespress in a statement that the price increase mainly pertains to bread made of durum wheat.
Azaz attributed the price increase largely to the rising costs of raw materials on the world market as well as environmental factors, including droughts in several countries.
“The rise in the prices of bread and sweets made of durum wheat took place some time ago, an increase ranging between 20 and 50 cents,” he stated, noting that, “it is not linked to the spike witnessed in recent days.”
Azaz also explained to Hespress that bread prices are influenced by the quality of the product, which varies between bakeries.
As of this Tuesday, the Economy and Finance Ministry said the price of the ordinary bread made of subsidized flour remains unchanged, at a stable level, for MAD 1.2 /unit.
The Ministry stated that the government continues to protect the purchasing power of citizens, and this recent rise is mainly attributed to the continuous increase in the price of raw materials on the world markets.
Despite the increase in costs of imported raw materials, the state continues to subsidize the prices of the soft wheat flour, sugar, and butane gas, in addition to the suspension of customs duties on the import of wheat tender, durum wheat, and legumes, the Ministry added.
