Morocco’s Higher Education Ministry raising the quota of medical students by 40% in 2023 in order to remedy the lack of social coverage in the country.

This move aims to have a total of 46 doctors for every 10,000 people by 2035.

The Ministry’s strategy centers on moving from 2,092 medical graduates annually to 6,530 by 2025, 8,770 graduates by 2030, and reaching a total of 16,590 doctors by 2025, and 49,650 by 2030.

The new strategy aims to adhere to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) requirements of providing 26 doctors for every 10,000 people within the next 3 years, according to data obtained by Hespress.

If this strategy is applied, there will be 31 doctors per 10,000 people by 2035, which is less than what the Development Model Committee established.

It is also expected that the number of students enrolled in the medical field will reach 11,170 during the academic year 2027-2028, while only 5,060 medical students were admitted in the current academic year.

During the next academic year, the Ministry is expected to raise the admissions rate by 40%, including 27% allocated to public institutions, in addition to opening up to private institutions.

The new strategy aims to limit student withdrawals to a maximum quota of 5% per academic year while ensuring that students receive all the tools they need for their pedagogical training.

The Higher Education Minister, Abdellatif Miraoui, said the duration of medical training would be reduced to 6 years, rather than 7, to guarantee medical coverage across the country.

Morocco’s Higher Education Ministry is still working on the proposal, and if approved, it will be implemented beginning next year, said Miraoui in a statement to Hespress.
