An audit of the Spanish Catholic Church will be conducted by an independent agency regarding sexual abuse committed against minors, the Episcopal Conference, an official assembly of the bishops of the Catholic Church in a given territory, reported on Monday.
Cardinal Juan Jose Omela, the president of the Episcopal Conference, and Javier Cremades, President of Cremades & Calvo Sotelo, a Spanish law firm, are expected to announce the specifics of the audit on February 22.
The professional office will establish an independent channel to receive complaints, review legal processes meant to punish criminal practices, and cooperate with the authorities to clarify the facts and create a prevention program that meets social requirements in this regard, according to a statement from the parties, reported by the Huffington Post.
On February 6, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez appointed the nation’s ombudsman, an official appointed by the government to investigate complaints, to lead the country’s first official investigation into the extent of sexual abuse committed by Roman Catholic clergy, AP reports.
Spanish lawmakers took the first step toward opening an inquiry into the issue of sexual abuse in the church just days before the ombudsman, Angel Gabilondo, submitted his proposal to lead the inquiry.
