Morocco’s Education Ministry signed a partnership agreement this Wednesday, February 16, with mobile network operators Inwi and Orange, in a move to support digital learning within the national educational system across the country.
This agreement was signed in the presence of Minister of Education Chakib Benmoussa, CEO and General Manager of Inwi Telecom Azzedine el Mountassir Billah, and General Manager of Orange Morocco Hendrik Kasteel.
The partnership will enable the Education Ministry to speed up the government’s efforts of moving towards a digital educational system for all, by providing tablets that will include pedagogical content for the benefit of students across the country.
This move comes as part of a model project, aiming to develop and renew the educational system nationwide as well as ensure pedagogical continuity in the circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The project will make it possible to create virtual classes linking teachers and students, guaranteeing access to educational platforms and contents, while providing free internet connectivity as a mechanism to improve the remote education system.
National Education Minister, Chakib Benmoussa said “this project will contribute to improve the quality of education as well as the promotion of e-learning, which will solve the issue of overcrowded classes in some educational institutions.”
Benmoussa valued this initiative while highlighting the important role of some organisms, including Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection headed by Princess Lalla Hasnaa, expressing his gratitude to the institution for its support of the Ministry’s efforts to ensure pedagogical continuity, in light of the circumstances related to the pandemic.
The official stated his Ministry “will begin experimenting with this educational model in a select number of institutions, and then it will be generalized nationwide if it shows positive results.”
“The educational system will experience other changes other than digitization in order to improve its quality,” the Minister added.
Last month, Morocco adopted a hybrid mode in education, depending on the epidemiological situation.
The Ministry also adopted a health protocol, which included the mandatory closure of classrooms, once it has recorded 3 positive COVID cases among students, as well as the implementation of remote education for 7 days.
If more than 10 cases are recorded in different classrooms, the school must shut down and implement remote education for at least a whole week, in line with local authorities.
