Morocco is ranked 80th globally in the Institute of Economics and Peace’s latest Positive Peace Report, and 2nd in North Africa.
This average for the Kingdom corresponds to eight different indicators, having scored 3.29 points for governance, 3.43 for corruption, 3.63 for the business environment, 3.01 for equitable distribution of resources, 3.27 for rights of others, 2.26 for free flow of information, 3.24 for high levels of human capital and 3.11 for good neighborly relations.
The Index works on a scale of 0 being the highest peace score, to 5 being the least peaceful environment.
No nation has achieved the zero peace index score, although Sweden, leading the ranking, accumulated 1.228 points, ahead of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Switzerland.
Somalia ranked last globally, ranking 163rd and scoring 4.590 points.
Although it is down 7 places from the previous edition, Morocco remains in the category of countries with a “high level of positive peace,” according to the Australian think-tank’s report.
At the regional level, the Kingdom is ranked 9th in the MENA region, and second in North Africa behind Tunisia. In the MENA, Israel came first, ranked 34th place globally, followed by the United Arab Emirates, placing 37th, then came Kuwait (46th), Qatar (49th), Tunisia (54th), Oman (55th), Bahrain (72nd), Saudi Arabia (79th), Morocco (80th), Jordan (83rd), Algeria (96th), Lebanon (105th), Palestine (106th) and Iran (108th).
However, the MENA region remains the least peaceful in the world for the sixth year in a row, with several ongoing conflicts.
At the continental level, the Kingdom is in the top ten in Africa, having ranked 8th, behind Mauritius, Botswana, Tunisia, South Africa, Ghana, Namibia, and Senegal.
The 98-page report defines positive peace as “the attitudes, institutions and structures that create and maintain peace in societies.”
It reveals that the overall Positive Peace Index score has improved by 2.4% since 2009, with 126 countries moving up in positive peace, 36 countries deteriorating and one country keeping almost the same level of peace.
However, the overall level of peace in the world declined for the first time in five years, says the report.
Each year since 2015, the positive global peace index has improved, although the improvement was very small from 2019 to 2020.
The slowdown in the rate of improvement in 2020 was associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, the report said.
