Morocco continues to observe a rapid decline of the Omicron wave for the second consecutive week, said the coordinator of the National Center for Public Health Emergency Operations at the Health Ministry, Mouad Merabet, in a recent LinkedIn post published on February 6.

Based on the latest epidemiological data as of February 6, Merabet reported a 52% drop in COVID-19 cases, a weekly positive rate of 14.9%, and the reproduction number of the COVID-19 virus is at 0.80%.

“This indicator of reproduction is under 1 in all regions, except the Oriental,” he said.

However, the Health official is urging caution against getting infected, as the surge of the virus remains high, but the rate of transmission has slowed for the 4th consecutive week.

Infections are expected to be moderate next week, Merabet said, noting that a peak of cases was reached last week between January 24-30.

The drop in severe cases and intensive care units has begun from January 31, and will last until February 6, with a weekly change of 29%, the Health official added.

Over the past two weeks, the death rate nationwide remained stable, but has reached a peak and will continue to do so for another week, with a daily death rate of 6.3 per 1 million of the population.

The death rate was reported to be much higher among the unvaccinated population, with 28.3 deaths per 1 million unvaccinated people, excluding children under 11.

Merabet concluded his LinkedIn post by calling on citizens to get their COVID-19 vaccinations, especially the third booster shot, and to abide by precautionary measures and the national therapeutic protocol treatment.
