Sunday 30 January 2022 - 22:40

The US Department of State announced the launch of an open program to promote projects in Morocco that encourage freedom of expression, the right to information, and the protection of journalists in Morocco.

The US State Department stated on its official website that it aims, through the Bureau of Democracy and Human Rights (DRL) attached to the department, to provide individuals with greater freedom of expression in the North African Kingdom.

The objectives of the Office of Democracy and Human Rights are “to support the effective implementation of the right to freedom of expression and access to information,” by strengthening existent and relevant international commitments.

Such as the Open Government Partnership, these initiatives will support the exercise of the legal and institutional norms that guarantee freedom of expression and access to information in Morocco.

The State Department said that these programs “should enhance accountability, enable civil society to monitor and promote freedom of expression and the right to information securely, as well as promote a better understanding of international principles of the right to access public information.”

The US State Department proposes a range of topics of interest to these initiatives, such as expanding spaces for the safe and free exercise of freedom of expression and supporting civil society efforts to provide oversight.

Strengthening the implementation of freedom of expression and right to information laws is also at the core of the program, while it also aims to support the capacity of journalists and media actors to work safely while accessing information.
