Marsa Maroc Group reported a total turnover of MAD 3,592 million in 2021, up by 30% compared to the turnover recorded a year earlier, set at MAD 2,757 million.

In its latest report on the indicators for the 4th quarter of 2021, Marsa Maroc said that port traffic totaled 47.2 million tonnes in 2021, up by 32.4% compared to the same period of 2020.

This volume includes traffic of 9.8 MT carried out by the Tanger Alliance subsidiary which started its activity on January 1, 2021, specified Marsa Maroc’s report.

Traffic has grown by 5% over the past 12 months, excluding the contribution of Tanger Alliance, the same source added.

This level of activity comes as a result of the evolution of domestic container traffic, which increased by 13% compared to the end of December 2020, reaching a volume of 1,040 KEVP (twenty-foot equivalent unit). The Tanger Alliance subsidiary trafficked 866 KEVP of transshipment container traffic in 2021.

According to the Group, it is also the result of bulk and conventional traffic which reached a volume of 27.3 MT, up 4% compared to the same period last year, mainly justified by the resumption of hydrocarbon traffic.

Additionally, the investments committed by the group by the end of December 2021 amounted to MAD 683 million, up compared to MAD455 million recorded in the same period last year. These investments are mainly linked to the acquisition of equipment.

As for the group’s net debt by the end of December 2021, it totaled MAD 1,028 million, made up of MAD 2,642 million of financing debts, and MAD 1,614 million of cash.

Financing debts increased compared to 2020, following the drawing of MAD 1,254 million made during the first quarter of 2021 by the Tanger Alliance subsidiary on its long-term credit, the report concluded.

In 2021, the government sold 35% of its stake in the country’s main operator of ports, Marsa Maroc to Tanger Med for MAD 5.48 billion in order to rebound from the economic crisis impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
