Morocco is expected to face difficult upcoming two weeks due to a peak in COVID-19 infections before the third wave begins to subside, according to members of the Moroccan scientific committee on Covid-19.
The period will be marked by an increase in difficult and critical cases, despite the slight decline in the daily number of COVID-19 infections.
Moutawakil stressed to Hespress AR that the number will rise as the infection spreads, with between 30 and 40 deaths a day, which will then decline.
In a statement to Hespress AR, Said Moutawakil, a member of the Scientific Committee stated that in view of recent sanitary developments, infections will inevitably rise in the upcoming weeks.
With the Omicron variant dominating over 95% of infections in Morocco, the repercussions on the general well-being of vaccinated citizens remaining, as the new mutant was proven to be less severe than its predecessor, Delta.
The resuscitation units in Moroccan hospitals consist mostly of the elderly and unvaccinated population, where the average age of patients is 60 years old.
Moutawakil additionally stated that “the delta mutant was a significantly greater danger on both children and unvaccinated adults.”
The World Health Organization (WHO) had previously confirmed that “the Omicron strain infects the upper respiratory tract and causes milder symptoms than the previous Delta mutant, which can cause severe pneumonia.”
Scientific studies revealed that the Omicron variant requires shorter treatment periods in hospitals, and patients carrying the mutant rarely need to be admitted to intensive care units, which results in fewer deaths.
The Omicron mutant has not caused serious complications for children in Morocco, according to the health official, as most if not all critical COVID-19 cases in Moroccan hospitals are among unvaccinated seniors.
The official confirmed that the small percentage of children who have been infected with the new COVID-19 variant have been spared severe symptoms.
Close to 20 children and infants have died in Morocco due to COVID-19. None, however, were carrying the Omicron mutant.
