Transparency International ranked Morocco 87 among 180 countries in its Corruption Perception Index report for 2020, a one-point down from the 2020 score.
“In Morocco, an emergency law not only deprived citizens of their freedoms of movement, assembly and speech, but was also used as legal cover for targeting government critics and human rights defenders speaking up about (mis)management of the country’s pandemic response,” said Transparency in a note attached to the report on corruption in the Middle East and North Africa.
The index, which ranks 180 countries by their levels of public sector corruption according to experts, uses a scale of 0 to 100 to rank Corruption Perception Index (CPI), where 0 is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean. Transparency International gave Morocco a CPI score of 39.
At the level of the Arab world, the best place went to the United Arab Emirates which obtained a score of 69 out of 100, ranking it 24th worldwide. UAE was followed by Qatar 63rd, Saudi Arabia with 53 points.
The Arab countries where most corruption is rife are war or conflict zones, namely Syria with 13 points, Yemen with 16 points, and Libya with 17 points.
The top of the ranking is occupied by countries of northern Europe, namely Denmark, Finland, and also New Zealand take first place, followed by Norway, Singapore, and Sweden.
