Moroccan security forces announced on Wednesday the arrest of two suspects on suspicion of links to Daesh and planning “terrorist” attacks in the kingdom.
The Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations said the two suspects, both 23, in the Marrakesh-Safi region.
Preliminary investigations showed “the two extremists had declared ‘loyalty’ to the alleged emir of the so-called ‘Islamic State’ organization,” said the Central Bureau.
The two terrorism suspects were active in circulating extremist texts to attract followers both online and physically, said the security forces.
One of the suspects undertook “a serious effort to train on traditional manufacture of explosives to carry out terrorist operations,” said the statement.
“ The investigation indicates that one of the arrested extremists was praising criminal operations that targetted financial and banking institutions.”
A home search enabled security forces to seize mobile phones, a set of publications with extremist content issued by Daesh, and a realistic face mask.
The two suspects were kept under custody, pending investigations.
Authorities had arrested in December at least 10 people suspected of planning terrorist operations in several cities.
The suspects had plotted attacks in cities including Oujda, Berkane, Tiznit, Azilal, Tetouan, and Casablanca.
The terrorist events in Casablanca on May 16, 2003, urged Moroccan authorities to develop a proactive policy based on confronting extremist ideology.
Since 2003, security authorities have dismantled 210 terrorist cells and arrested more than 4,304 people, according to official data.
