The Moroccan General Directorate of National Security has made changes to the names of the border security crossings to Spanish enclaves, Ceuta and Melilla.
The General Directorate has reportedly sent a telegram to security centers at the crossings of both Melilla and Ceuta, to reformulate their designations, deleting the word “border.”
The denominations of the crossings were expected to change this year, as a new procedure was announced by the General Directorate of National Security, in light of the tension between Morocco and Spain.
The denomination has now gone from “border crossing of Bab Ceuta” to the “crossing of Ceuta,” and “Border crossing of Bab Melila” to “crossing of Bab Melilla.”
These changes come at a time when Moroccan-Spanish relations have been experiencing significant diplomatic tensions since last year, following Spain’s hosting of separatist Polisario member, Brahim Ghali.
Despite Spanish officials’ various statements about wanting to build “a new 21st-century bilateral relationship,” relations between the two countries have yet to reach appeasement.
The Ceuta and Melilla enclaves’ crossings have been closed since early 2020, in an effort to contain the COVID-19 virus. Since then, multiple border closure decisions have been issued, as Moroccans remain stranded on the North African Spanish territories.
